Sherm Cohen is a cartoonist, writer and storyboard artist. He got his start in animation at Nickelodeon on The Ren and Stimpy Show as a character layout artist, followed by a three-year stint on Hey Arnold as storyboard artist and director. In early 1998, Sherm Cohen was invited by SpongeBob's creator Steve Hillenburg to be part of the original SpongeBob SquarePants crew. Sherm spent the first season on the show as a writer, storyboard artist and director, then moved up to Storyboard Supervisor for the next three seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants. Sherm was also lead storyboard artist and character designer on The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. After SpongeBob's fourth season, Sherm left Nickelodeon to write and illustrate a book on how to draw cartoons, "Cartooning: Character Design," which was recently released from Walter Foster Publications. After spending two seasons writing and drawing boards at Cartoon Network, Sherm went across town to be a writer and storyboard artist on the TV series, Phineas and Ferb at Walt Disney Studios.

Blue Pilot iPhone Comic Reader App Video

The developers at Blue Pilot software have created a comic book reader application especially for the iPhone that will allow cartoonists and comic book creators to create and distribute iPhone comics, and offer them for sale as apps through the iTunes store!

According to the Blue Pilot Software website, “Comic Reader is our generic comic book reader. This allows any indie comic writer and artist to set up and publish their comics to Apples AppStore. Having the ability to view not only the final content but also, pencil drawing, line artwork and colour layers.

This application has been specifically designed and written for the iPhone and iPod Touch and as such lends itself to the full experience and ease of use synonymous with Apple’s technology.”

The demo video below shows the power of this app with the iPhone comic called Murderdrome. With the possibilties on display in the video, this could be a great app for reading comic books on your iPhone, as well as for creating rich and unique comic book content especially for the iPhone. As a cartoonist and a comic book lover (and a rabid iPhone user), I’m pretty excited about this one!

This looks very promising – I hope there will be enough content for it. The swipe to reveal pencils and inks is very cool! Overall it looks like a cut above the clickwheel reader which I’ve also tried.

Thanks for this site too btw.

Hi Howard…I haven’t tried Clickwheel yet because the content seems pretty limited. I’m interested to hear what you liked and disliked about it. Thanks for the kind words about the blog, too ^_^

Thanks for the kind words. We’re overwhelmed with input at the moment both from comic book fans who want it on their phone and creators who want to get their stuff out there AND get paid for it.

The web site is coming together – see what early leaks do!!!!

Hi there! Thought you’d like to know, EyeCandy #1 – our new kids comic (built using the same engine that Murderdrome used) is NOW available to download from the app store (http://tinyurl.com/4qjr4p) it’s under the Blue Pilot software banner (since it’s a kids comic). Please let us know what you think, we intend to make this a monthly kids comic (and it’s the first monthly comic created exclusively for the iPhone/iPod touch, so we’re pretty excited)

Touchtip has a nice write up of EyeCandy which was followed up by an excellent interview with Matt Johnston from Infurious Comics. PJ, your work is great and we love it on the iPhone running the Infurious comic reader software. Great stuff.
